Palace Garden – Contemporary Swedish Glass Art
A collective exhibition with the artists Bertil Vallien, Åsa Jungnelius, Ellen Ehk Åkesson, Markus Åkesson and Johan Röing.
The exhibition Palace Garden shows glass art by Bertil Vallien, a master of Swedish glass art, and works by four other prominent artists, which together give the viewer a picture of where contemporary Swedish glass art is today.
Three of the participants are not glass artists from the beginning, but artists with backgrounds in other materials, who have approached glass from completely different starting points. We can see this as part of an interesting international development where glass is taking an increasingly large place as an artistic material.
Johan Röing is a sculptor through and through, with an intuitive feel for materials. Ellen Ehk Åkesson comes from the world of ceramics, while Markus Åkesson is a virtuoso painter. Åsa Jungnelius is a trained glassblower, but as an artist she has distinguished herself with her exciting combinations of glass and other materials. They all share the passion for glass as a material and the commitment to Kosta Glasbruk and the area. Together with Bertil Vallien, who stands for the many years of tradition and knowledge, they represent an interesting range.
The glass art shown in the Palace Garden exhibition is work that also reflects and represents the common knowledge that the glass factory carries with its master blowers, glass cutters, decorative painting and installation. The exhibition shows where glass art, craftsmanship and tradition currently stand.
