Tango comes from South America! Or…? Where does it belong? Juanjo Passo and Hedda Heskianen on bandoneon, guitar, violin and piano take us on a musical journey with tango as a guiding light with music from several corners of the world, from Finland to South America. Both traditional and newly written. After the break, anyone who wants to is invited to dance to the music.

The tango duo in which Finland meets Argentina and the common thread is tango!

Duo SisuPlatense presents a unique musical journey that reflects the breadth of the repertoire with everything from the traditional tango to concert and dance. Songs from the birthplace of tango, Finnish melancholy melodies together with spicy folk music are interspersed with stories about a genre that lives and develops even today with a new sound and a new pulse…

Duo SisuPlatense presents a dynamic meeting between two cultures. In a varied program, the music is interspersed with narration from tango’s rich history.

“The music that the audience will hear combines all elements of the duo’s musicality and it has its roots in tango, both Argentine and Finnish, in folk music from two continents and in the classical world. It will be a varied but complex program with own compositions, folk music, music by Astor Piazzolla and a lot of tango, all presented by a duo on five different instruments, as well as vocals.”

Hedda Heiskanen: piano, key harp, violin and vocals.

Juanjo Passo: bandoneon, 7-string guitar.

From an article in LIRA Folkmusikmagasin, written by Karolina Jeppson in 2023:

Duo SisuPlatense is a brand new Malmö group consisting of Hedda Heiskanen and Juanjo Passo. They are known from the well-known Orquesta Tangarte where the music is mainly about Argentine tango.

In their new constellation, they have built a completely new repertoire where Argentina meets Finland and bandoneon meets key harp. The music you will hear combines all elements of their musicality and, as you will hear, it has its roots in tango, both Finnish and Argentine, in folk music and from the classical world.

– In our music there are elements of everything possible. But it’s probably best for the listener to describe how it sounds, says Hedda.

The duo premiered at a music festival in Granada earlier this year, where they also performed a work by the composer Daniel Fjellström, specially written for bandoneon and key harp and for Duo Sisu Platense.

– In tango, it is almost a bit orthodox and conservative to play the bandoneon. It has been very challenging to break those rules. We have had to decide to do this without complexes, says Juanjo. The first gig in Malmö will therefore be at the Malmö Festival. Duo SisuPlatense is a true Malmö saga.
